Piano - Iain Masson
Iain is a Scottish composer, conductor and pianist. He works as a freelance music leader, conductor and piano accompanist in the West Midlands. Iain is a graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music and was the winner of the RNCM Alan Rawsthorne Composition Prize in 2005.
At the age of 16, he became Resident Pianist with the Swallow Hotel Group playing then becoming pianist at Wigmore's Wine Bar and Bistro in Broughty Ferry. As a Conservatoire student, he worked as a Resident Pianist at Bar Epernay in the Mailbox Birmingham, and at 25 became the Friday and Saturday night solo pianist. His compositions have been performed on BBC Radio 3 and around the UK and abroad, most notably by the acclaimed Brodsky Quartet. His compositions have been performed at venues including the Bridgewater Hall, Royal Swedish Opera - Kungliga Operan, the Italian Culture Institute Stockholm, King's Place London, Brighton Corn Exchange, Regent Hall London and the Adrian Boult Hall to name a few, in addition to performances as far afield as Sydney, Australia. In 2015 he was proudly awarded Honorary Membership (HonBC) of Birmingham Conservatoire for services to the music profession in the 10 years following graduation.
Robbie Fearon - Woodwind (Sax, Clarinet, Flute)
Robbie Fearon is a graduate of Birmingham Conservatoire where he studied saxophone on the Jazz course. He started playing Clarinet before switching to saxophone and has Classical as well as Jazz and Pop playing experience. His own quartet has played in venues around Birmingham, most recently as part of Birmingham's Jazz Legends festival, and he works around the west midlands as a freelance musician.
Robbie has experience of teaching woodwind instruments to all ages and abilities from complete beginner to advanced student. He can help students through their music exams and is also qualified to assess ABRSM Music Medals (pre-grade 1 exams). Robbie tailors lessons to his student's interests and learning objectives, and enjoys teaching with patience and understanding.
Abi K - Vocals
Abi K, 24, is a Jazz, Blues and Soul singer and songwriter, based in Moseley, Birmingham, England. Currently she is the leader of her band Abi K & The Roadsters (trio, 4, 5 or six piece) and goes out as an acoustic duo also. She has performed with the likes of Robert Plant and Steve Winwood, Ruby Turner; as well as performing with other fantastic musicians.
As a Vocal Coach, Abi covers a multitude of genres; popular music, using the blanket term. She is not limited to an age range. All ages and abilities are welcome. Whether you wish to purely improve your skill, to continue your hobby; you’re studying music/vocals within higher education; are a semi-professional or professional; or purely want to improve your shower singing, Abi K can help to improve and hone your voice and performance skills. Song writing can also be covered if you wish.
Olga Eckert - Violin / Viola
Olga, originally from Poland, started playing violin aged 6. She is currently studying at Birmingham Conservatoire. She is involved in many orchestras and chamber ensembles. As a member of the Continental Quartet she performed at Wigmore Hall, Windsor Castle and Cheltenham Town Hall.
She is friendly and experienced teacher and from 2017 she became a student mentor in Junior Conservatoire.
Doug Ward - Drums
Dave ‘Murdock’ Swales – Guitar/Bass
Dave is guitarist, session musician regular face on the Birmingham and West Midlands live music circuit. He graduated from the London College of Music and has been a freelance music teacher since 2007.
Paul Riley: Piano
Having studied music at Cardiff University, Paul has been playing the piano for 18 years, over which time he has played in various bands, giving him experience in a broad range of styles, including: Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Motown, Bossa Nova, Samba. He has also played in many local churches, at weddings, funerals and other services over the past ten years. During this time Paul has been an enthusiastic piano tutor, both in schools peripatetically and privately, and has been influenced by his many musical pursuits. Consequently, he is a versatile teacher who is equally happy to teach those who want to go through the Grades as those looking for a more tailored approach who are looking to learn songs by ear or learn improvisation and Jazz. He enjoys learning French and juggling in his spare time.
